“It was a momentous day when you came from far across the Milky Way”
 
And so begins the journey of a tiny soul carrying a little suitcase with a mysterious item inside, about to board a celestial train to its new earthly home.

This was an idea that came to me from somewhere I cannot explain except to say it was a story that would not leave me alone until I sat down to deliver it to the physical world. What has followed is a book for new parents about to experience their baby’s arrival and the utter strangeness, wonder, and eternal love that goes along with it.

Here are some insights into how I work. For this book, I wrote the story first. I wanted to make very detailed black & white tonal sketches before I tried to paint them in color. Seeing the darks and lights at this stage makes the transition to the finishes easier. Here are 75% of the finished tonal sketches on the wall – on the table are the rest of spreads in earlier stages.

On my drawing board is the early part of the dummy, a cut up page of the manuscript, and some title page ideas. The next step will be finishing up the tonal drawings and then doing quick color sketches, then finishes.
